Northrop X-4 ‘Bantam’ / 1948

Developed to explore tailless flight, the X-4 eschewed horizontal control surfaces by using elevons for pitch and roll. So twitchy upon its maiden flight, Pilot Charles Tucker recalled he’d ‘got pretty drunk that night!’.
